Darren Policare was born and raised in Los Angeles. He developed an interest in art during his formative years- influenced by his brother's drawings, graffiti, cartoons and classmates who were naturals at artmaking.
He attended the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and was naturally drawn to street and outsider art. Finding work at Circle Fine Art Gallery (as a galley aide) sparked a deep interest in both formal exhibit spaces and making art selections for emerging talent.
Finding his personal 'voice' through art proved challenging; due to having too many pictorial and technical interests. Darren's indecision and frustration with a formal education resulted in his decision to leave the Academy of Art and dive head first into a field that he understood- the culinary arts. A two-decade career in film studio operations followed his culinary pursuit.
Darren spent a solid seventeen years developing the work of other artists; before returning to painting. His work is inspired by surf culture, pop art, the humor in High School folder art, graffiti from the 1980s, African-American folk art, blending mediums that have no business being blended and using found materials.
Throughout his artistic career, Darren has primarily exhibited his work in silent auctions (benefiting children with disabilities/women's), coffee shops, crafting custom children's room interiors and creating one of a kind bodyboards/wave tools.
Darren believes that, at its best, artmaking is more of a natural purge valve than creating images that are catchy. Not having a complete grasp on what he intends to make, the surface he works on dictates the next image that is going to be generated.
Currently, Darren is working on a new compact/upcycled fuel source (with the intention to distribute globally) and continues to advise creatives and companies identifying new revenue streams and correct challenges with optimization.
On the art front, he mentors teens to pursue their creative ventures and is personally working on a body of sixteen new paintings. The works are intended for a solo show that is a culmination of four different styles, subjects of interest and self created techniques.
